Forward Deployed Engineer vs. Solutions Engineer: What’s the Difference?

Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) and Solutions Engineer (SE) are close cousins, both are technical, customer-facing roles, but they differ in where they spend their time on the build-versus-sell spectrum. If you are choosing between them or trying to figure out which interview you are actually facing, this comparison should help.

The core difference

A Solutions Engineer typically sits closer to sales: they demo the product, scope technical fit, answer prospect questions, and help close deals, heavier on pre-sales, lighter on hands-on delivery. A Forward Deployed Engineer sits closer to engineering: they actually build, integrate, and deploy solutions inside the customer's environment, across both pre-sales and post-sales, and spend real time writing code and wrangling data.

Put simply: an SE helps the customer decide to buy; an FDE makes the thing work for the customer after (and often before) they do. The line blurs by company, and some titles are used interchangeably.

Which should you choose?

Pick by what you want your days to look like, not by title. Choose Solutions Engineer if you enjoy the deal cycle: demos, discovery calls, and being the technical voice that helps a prospect say yes, with lighter hands-on building. Choose Forward Deployed Engineer if you would rather be elbow-deep in the customer's data and systems, writing real code and owning whether the deployment actually works.

Both open doors. SEs often move toward sales leadership or product; FDEs often move toward senior engineering, solutions architecture, or founding-engineer roles, because the job builds a rare mix of deep technical range and customer instinct. If you are unsure which loop you are in, the coding and SQL rounds are the tell: heavy technical rounds mean FDE.

Skills and interview focus

Both roles reward communication and product knowledge. But an FDE interview goes deeper on hands-on engineering, practical coding, SQL, data, deployment, and open-ended problem-solving, while an SE interview weights demoing, discovery, and handling technical objections, with lighter live coding.

If your loop includes a real coding round, a SQL round, and an open-ended technical case, you are almost certainly interviewing for an FDE-style role, and should prepare accordingly.
